For many people, if you say “solar panels”, it conjures the image of large panels atop a house. Maybe they also think of a large commercial panel, positioned over a warehouse. Many, however, overlook the versatility of a portable solar panel. Keep reading to see the many uses such a device has.
What is it?
It’s as simple as the name implies. A portable solar panel is a small, compact version of the larger panels mentioned above. Even among these, there is a diversity of sizes, models, and power levels. Many come with their own batteries, as well. These devices have a variety of uses, making them a worthwhile investment.
Which One?
There are a plethora of options available when it comes to portable solar panels. It will take some research, and will depend on what your needs are and what wattage will satisfy those needs. Most reputable brands will suffice.
Camping
A portable solar panel can be a great addition to camping gear. They can be used for simple things, like gathering power to keep phones charged. They can also be used for more in-depth tasks, such as heating a tent for winter camping. If you are backpacking for multiple days, or in backcountry, having a small portable solar panel for your communication devices could literally be the difference between life and death.
Van Life
Piggy-backing off of the point above, living in a modified van or camper is a great opportunity for the uses of a portable solar panel to really shine. When living in a van, multiple solar panels can be used to power whatever you need; refrigerators, heaters, wifi, etc. There are people living in vans who power all of the appliances for their lifestyle using solar panels. You need to be judicious in their use, particularly if sunlight is not plentiful. However, a few quality solar panels will save you from utilizing your vehicle’s gas and electricity. Options for power also gives you a backup plan in the event you’re having vehicle problems or issues with your camper. Options are always good!
Emergency
A natural disaster can be incredibly disruptive to normal life. Whether it’s a snowstorm, flood, hurricane, or any other catastrophe, any event which knocks out the power is inconvenient. At worst, it’s life-threatening. Having multiple methods of providing power (see above; options!) can help you not only survive such an event, but also remain comfortable. You are not going to power your home off of portable solar panels. However, even if you have a generator, a portable solar panel or two can be a great help in the event of an emergency.
Similar to their uses for camping, you can use a portable solar panel for all of the smaller things you don’t want to use a generator for. Need to charge your phone or computer? The portable solar panel is great for such things. Keeping lines of communication open will be less strain on emergency services or private companies assisting with the disaster.
