Lubricity
Since a sulfur reduction was mandated for on road vehicles in 2007, this reduction of sulfur in diesel fuel also reduces the fuel’s lubricity. Lubricity means the ability to reduce friction between surfaces in motion under a load. When a fuel’s lubricity is too low, it will cause the fuel injectors and high pressure pumps to grind and wear out. The fuel itself should be able to lubricate the injection pumps enough so that this wear and tear doesn’t happen.
Cetane Rating
A fuel’s octane number identifies its ability to resist auto-ignition or engine knocking. Engine knocking occurs when fuel burns unevenly in the engine’s cylinders. With the mixture of air and fuel, fuel will burn in pockets, and after each pocket burns it will create a shock that sounds like a firework. This knocking can be obnoxious and cause damage to the engine’s cylinder walls and pistons.
Diesel Fuel Stability
This refers to the potential for a fuel to change conditions during its storage time and its resistance to breaking down.
